Morocco’s government said Saturday that the failure to renew MINURSO’s mandate represents a significant step toward closing the Sahara dispute at the United Nations, following Russia’s veto of a US-backed Security Council resolution.

Government spokesperson and Housing Minister Samir Belfqih said the development reflected growing international support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces and its autonomy initiative as the basis for negotiations.

In remarks carried by Morocco’s state news agency MAP, Belfqih said the Royal Cabinet’s statement marked a new phase in the dispute and reflected the diplomatic momentum generated under King Mohammed VI.

He highlighted the timing of the announcement ahead of the first anniversary of Unity Day, established following the adoption of Security Council Resolution 2797 in October 2025.

Belfqih described MINURSO’s 35-year presence as part of an outdated international framework, arguing that the diplomatic environment had changed considerably since the mission’s establishment in 1991.

He also noted that 11 Security Council members supported the American draft, although Russia’s veto prevented its adoption.

The spokesperson reaffirmed Morocco’s commitment to the ceasefire and said the government would continue supporting diplomatic efforts and accelerating development in the southern provinces.
