Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita held telephone talks Friday with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, discussing bilateral cooperation and coordination at the United Nations amid negotiations over a new Security Council resolution on the Moroccan Sahara.
The conversation took place at Morocco’s initiative, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.
The two ministers discussed strengthening Moroccan-Russian relations, preparations for the third Russia-Africa Summit, scheduled for October 28–29 in Moscow, and current regional developments.
Moscow said both sides also addressed continued foreign policy coordination, including within the United Nations.
The discussions come as Security Council members examine a US-drafted resolution proposing significant changes to MINURSO’s mandate and placing Morocco’s autonomy proposal under Moroccan sovereignty at the centre of negotiations.
Russia, a permanent Security Council member with veto power, will be among the countries considering the proposed resolution ahead of MINURSO’s October 31 mandate expiry.
The Russian statement did not specify whether the Sahara draft was discussed.
