Morocco ranked 47th out of 122 countries in the 2026 Global Hunger Index, scoring 9.0 out of 100 and placing it in the low hunger category, according to the report.
The kingdom’s score is below both the regional average of 12.5 for West Asia and North Africa and the global average of 18.1.
The Global Hunger Index, jointly published by Welthungerhilfe, the Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict (IFHV) and Swiss organization Helvetas, measures hunger using four indicators: undernourishment, child stunting, child wasting and mortality among children under five.
The report estimates that 6.5% of Morocco’s population is undernourished.
Among children under five, 13.7% experience stunted growth, while 2.7% suffer from wasting. The under-five mortality rate stands at 1.6%.
Morocco has made progress in reducing child stunting over the past two decades, with the rate falling from 25.3% in 2000 to 13.7% in the latest figures. However, the share of the population experiencing undernourishment rose from 5.8% to 6.5% over the same period.
Across West Asia and North Africa, Syria recorded the highest hunger score in 2026, at 31.5, followed by Libya at 12.9, Iraq at 11.9, Oman at 10.8 and Egypt at 10.5.
Kuwait, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates each scored below 5.
Welthungerhilfe, a German aid organization, warned that global hunger is rising again after years of progress, as conflict, climate shocks and economic crises undermine efforts to reduce food insecurity.
According to the organization, hunger levels have increased in 32 countries, while 57 countries are not expected to reach even the low hunger category by 2030.
