A Saudi medical and surgical team on Thursday successfully separated Moroccan conjoined twins, Saja and Doha, who were joined at the chest and abdomen.

The twins, aged one year and one month, underwent the complex procedure at King Abdullah Specialized Children’s Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as part of the Saudi Conjoined Twins Program.

Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al-Rabeeah, adviser at the Saudi Royal Court, supervisor general of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre and head of the program’s medical and surgical team, said the operation was completed in six stages and lasted six hours.

Speaking to the center’s YouTube channel ahead of the surgery, Al-Rabeeah said the medical and nursing team comprised 23 specialists experienced in conjoined-twin separation procedures.

He said the operation would involve separating the twins’ liver and intestines after anesthesia and sterilization. The twins would then be separated on two operating tables before the surgical teams closed the wounds.
