Courts in Ceuta opened 37 preliminary proceedings over alleged sexual assaults between July 30 and Sept. 14, involving 39 victims, according to data compiled by Spain’s General Council of the Judiciary.
The figures cover the period beginning with the mass arrivals into the Spanish-administered city at the end of July, which sharply increased pressure on local courts. The judicial data do not establish that the suspects in the cases were among those who crossed during the migration surge.
Of the 39 reported victims, 38 were women and one was an adult man. Fourteen of the female victims were minors.
By Sept. 14, 28 of the 37 cases remained under investigation. Eight had been provisionally closed and one had been merged with earlier proceedings. The 28 active cases involved 30 female victims, including 11 minors.
Judicial authorities recorded 37 suspected perpetrators, all men. Nineteen had been identified and were adults, while 18 remained unidentified at the time of the report.
The figures concern preliminary criminal proceedings and do not establish the guilt of any suspect.
