Jewish visitors from Morocco and abroad are gathering in Marrakech for Sukkot, with hotels and resorts hosting religious meals, prayers and community events during one of Judaism’s major annual festivals.
Sukkot began on Sept. 25 and ends Friday, Oct. 2, followed in the diaspora by Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah over the weekend. The festival traditionally includes meals and prayers in a temporary structure known as a *sukkah*.
A representative of Marrakech-Safi’s Moroccan Jewish community told Hespress that several hotels and resorts were receiving Jewish visitors from Morocco and overseas, with celebrations expected to continue through Sunday.
Marrakech has long been an important destination for Jewish religious and heritage travel because of its historic Mellah, synagogues, cemeteries and nearby burial sites associated with prominent rabbis.
The community representative described the gatherings as both religious celebrations and opportunities for Moroccan Jews living abroad to reconnect with family heritage and local religious sites.
The events come during the Jewish holiday season, following Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur in September.
