Morocco opened its Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifying campaign with a 2-0 victory over Gabon on Friday at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
Noussair Mazraoui put Morocco ahead in the 36th minute after the Atlas Lions dominated possession and repeatedly pressured the Gabonese defense.
Morocco continued to push for a second goal after the break, but Gabon held firm for much of the second half.
Soufiane Rahimi eventually doubled Morocco’s lead in the 84th minute, securing three points for the hosts.
The victory gives Morocco three points at the top of Group A, ahead of Niger on goal difference. Lesotho and Gabon remain without points.
Morocco will face Lesotho on Tuesday, Sept. 29, in Bloemfontein, South Africa, for its second Group A qualifying match. The game will be Morocco’s second competitive fixture under coach Mohamed Ouahbi.
The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations finals will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, with qualifying contested across 12 groups.
