Morocco approves first medicine price cuts under new reform, reductions to reach 70%

Nearly 300 medicines are set to become cheaper in Morocco under the first round of price reductions approved since the government overhauled pharmaceutical pricing rules, with cuts ranging from 10% to 70%.

The products and their new retail prices have not yet been published. They will be set out in a forthcoming regulatory text, meaning patients cannot yet determine which treatments are included in the first wave.

The reductions follow a decree published in August that changed how Morocco sets and reviews medicine prices. Prices must now be reviewed automatically every three years instead of every five, while all medicines marketed in Morocco are due for a broader review within 12 months of the decree taking effect.

For medicines priced above 300 dirhams at manufacturer level, Morocco will use the lowest comparable manufacturer price among six reference markets: Saudi Arabia, Belgium, Spain, France, Portugal and Turkey. Medicines below the 300-dirham threshold continue to use an average of reference-country prices.

The reform also cuts the import margin from 10% to 2.5%.
