Morocco imported more than €660 million ($716 million) worth of medical and pharmaceutical products from the European Union last year, while exporting just over €21.5 million to the bloc, according to new data from Eurostat.
The figures highlight a significant trade imbalance between Morocco and the EU in the pharmaceutical sector.
Across the bloc, EU countries exported more than €366 billion in medical and pharmaceutical products globally in 2025, while imports reached €145.7 billion, resulting in a record trade surplus of over €220 billion, Eurostat said.
Exports rose by 16% year-on-year, while imports increased by 21%, up from €120 billion in 2024.
Ireland led EU exporters to non-member countries with €93.8 billion in shipments, followed by Germany at nearly €68 billion and Belgium at more than €38 billion. Italy ranked as the largest importer from outside the EU, with €27.5 billion in imports.
The United States remained the top destination for EU pharmaceutical exports, accounting for more than 43% of total shipments, valued at over €160 billion. Switzerland followed with more than €59 billion, and the United Kingdom ranked third with over €20 billion.
On the import side, most EU pharmaceutical products came from the United States, Switzerland and China.
Eurostat noted that EU pharmaceutical exports have grown steadily since 2015, outpacing imports and driving the trade surplus from €69 billion that year to a record €221 billion in 2025. Over the same period, imports increased by 88%, while exports surged by 151%.
Despite fluctuations in annual growth rates, trade in the sector has remained largely positive over the past decade, with only isolated declines in imports in 2018 and exports in 2023, the agency said.
