Kylian Mbappé said he supported Ceuta’s residents but also wanted to acknowledge migrants who died or face difficult conditions, responding to criticism over how he wore a solidarity shirt before Real Madrid’s match against Elche.
The French forward told Spanish newspaper AS that clubs had decided players should wear the shirts.
“I am fully in solidarity with Ceuta and all the victims,” he said, adding that he wanted to spare a thought for migrants.
Mbappé, Vinicius Junior and Konaté wore the shirts only partially, prompting accusations from some supporters and journalists that they were concealing the message of support for Ceuta’s residents.
La Liga president Javier Tebas criticized the gesture, saying the campaign was an institutional initiative rather than an opportunity for individual expression.
The controversy follows mass crossings from Morocco in late July, which have fueled political disputes in Spain over migration, border security and relations with Rabat.
