Morocco advances high-speed rail project linking Marrakech and Agadir

Morocco’s planned high-speed rail link between Marrakech and Agadir has entered a new phase following the issuance of a government decree declaring the project to be of public utility and defining the territory covered by the planned line.

The measure clears the way for further administrative procedures related to the railway project, which authorities have presented as a strategic infrastructure investment aimed at improving passenger mobility and supporting economic activity.

The project is also expected to strengthen the Souss-Massa region’s integration into Morocco’s national rail network and improve connections between Agadir and other major economic centers.

The development comes as the estimated cost of constructing the Marrakech-Agadir line has been put at around 55 billion Moroccan dirhams ($5.8 billion).

Transport and Logistics Minister Abdessamad Kayouh cited the estimate in May, while stressing that the final cost could vary depending on the scope of the works and the components ultimately included in the project.

The Marrakech-Agadir link forms part of Morocco’s broader plans to expand and modernize its high-speed rail network as the country prepares for major infrastructure and transport needs over the coming years.
