Morocco's Eastern region emerges as rising tourism destination

The coastal area of Morocco’s Eastern region is set to become a new international tourist destination, leveraging its many seaside, natural and sports attractions, the Belgian daily ‘L’Echo’ reported on Tuesday.

Stretching for nearly 200 kilometers, from Saïdia to Al Hoceïma, this coastline aims to further convince international tourists of its attractions and aspires, in the coming years, to claim the title of Morocco’s “French Riviera,” the paper noted.

The region seeks to capitalize on its Mediterranean beaches, tourism infrastructure and diverse range of offerings combining seaside, water sports, sporting and wellness activities, it said.

In Saïdia, ‘L’Echo’ particularly highlighted a large marina capable of accommodating up to 850 boats, a wide range of water-based activities and two golf courses, all of which contribute to “the emergence of a high-end tourism offering with a distinctly Moroccan touch.”

The paper also pointed to the growing number of real estate and architectural projects, a sign of the gradual transformation of the seaside resort and, more broadly, of the entire Eastern region.

The daily further underlined that the Eastern region’s tourism ambitions extend beyond the coastline to its hinterland, particularly the Beni Snassen mountain range, renowned for its valleys, gorges and hiking trails.

To the east, the Marchica Lagoon, near Nador, represents another major pillar of regional tourism development, thanks to its ecological assets, the article’s author stressed, noting that the development and diversification of the hotel offering are helping strengthen the Eastern Region’s position on Morocco’s tourism map.

For ‘L’Echo’, this evolution reflects the region’s determination to emerge from the shadow of the Kingdom’s major tourist destinations by focusing on tourism that is more closely connected to nature, sports, the coastline and authenticity.
