Researchers from Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University in Fes have tested a group of chemical compounds to identify those with the strongest activity against gastric cancer cells, combining laboratory experiments with computer simulations to select candidates for further research.

The study, published Sept. 1, 2026, in the Beni-Suef University Journal of Basic and Applied Sciences, examined chemical derivatives from a class known as hydrazide-hydrazones and compared their activity against MGC803, a human gastric cancer cell line.

The researchers combined laboratory tests measuring the compounds’ effects on cancer cells with computational methods designed to predict how the molecules could interact with proteins associated with cancer. They also assessed characteristics including absorption, toxicity and stability.

Such approaches can help researchers screen large numbers of molecules before moving to more complex experiments, allowing them to focus laboratory work on compounds showing the strongest initial indications.

Compounds under testing

The researchers first compared the chemical structures of the compounds and their effects on cancer cells, looking for structural changes that could improve their activity.

They then used three-dimensional computational models to predict how small changes to the molecules’ structures could affect their behavior and proposed new compounds based on the results.

This approach can narrow the number of candidates requiring laboratory testing rather than requiring researchers to synthesize and test every possible compound.

The study also examined properties related to how the compounds might behave in the body, including absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion, as well as potential toxicity.

A compound that shows activity against cancer cells in a laboratory setting must also have other characteristics that could allow it to be developed further. Assessing these properties is therefore an important part of selecting potential candidates.

Using computers to guide experiments

The researchers used computational simulations to examine how some of the molecules could bind to proteins potentially involved in cancer-cell growth.

These methods can model where a molecule could bind within a protein and estimate the strength of the interaction. Longer simulations can then be used to assess the stability of the interaction as the molecules move.

The team compared the computational results with biological tests conducted on gastric cancer cells to determine whether compounds that appeared promising in the simulations also showed activity in laboratory experiments.

Combining the approaches can help researchers eliminate less promising candidates at an early stage and concentrate on compounds that perform well across multiple tests.

The researchers also used biological network analysis to identify proteins and molecular pathways that could potentially be affected by the compounds, providing a broader picture of their possible mechanisms of action.

More research needed before any treatment

The compounds examined in the study remain at an early stage of research. The work involved laboratory experiments on cancer cells and computer-based simulations; it did not test the compounds in humans.

Compounds showing promising results would need to undergo additional testing in other cell types, including studies examining their effects on healthy cells. Researchers would also need to establish appropriate doses, assess toxicity and determine how the compounds behave in living organisms.

Only after further preclinical research could a candidate potentially progress toward clinical testing in humans. Many compounds that initially appear promising in laboratory studies do not ultimately reach that stage.

The Fes research illustrates how chemistry, biological experiments and computational modeling can be combined to screen potential anti-cancer compounds and direct laboratory work toward candidates with stronger initial evidence.

The next stages will depend on whether the selected compounds maintain their activity in broader testing and whether they can affect cancer cells while maintaining acceptable safety profiles.
