Moroccan security forces intercepted 294 people seeking to migrate irregularly near Ceuta by 2:45 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15, with no mass crossing into the Spanish enclave recorded despite online calls for a coordinated attempt, a security source told Hespress.
The group included 248 people from sub-Saharan African countries and 46 Moroccans, according to the updated provisional toll. The number had risen from 111 intercepted during operations earlier Saturday morning.
Security operations remained underway around Fnideq and other routes leading toward the border, involving several security services and local authorities.
Authorities deployed drones for aerial surveillance, mobile intervention units and water-cannon trucks, while reinforcing checkpoints and monitoring along major roads and approaches to Morocco’s northern border areas.
The measures were intended to detect groups before they could gather near sensitive crossing points and reduce direct confrontations during interventions.
Saturday’s deployment followed anonymous social media calls encouraging a mass crossing into Ceuta on Aug. 15. Morocco had reinforced security around Ceuta and Melilla in the preceding days and warned that organizers and participants in illegal crossings could face prosecution.
Authorities said the situation around the border remained under control as operations continued.
