UN Secretary-General António Guterres appointed Pakistan’s Major General Jawwad Ahmed as the new force commander of MINURSO, the UN mission in the Sahara, the United Nations said in a statement published on Aug. 11.
Ahmed succeeds Bangladesh’s Major General Md Fakhrul Ahsan, who completed his assignment on Aug. 2 after more than three years at the head of the mission’s military component. Guterres thanked Ahsan for what he described as his “exemplary service and leadership.”
Ahmed b previously served as a director general at Pakistan’s Defence Ministry in Rawalpindi, commanded an infantry division and led the army’s Northern Areas force.
Earlier in his career, Ahmed served with a Pakistani battalion in the UN Transitional Administration for Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Sirmium in Croatia.
He holds degrees in warfare, public policy and strategic security management from Pakistan’s National Defence University and a postgraduate qualification from King’s College London.
