Morocco and Spain reinforce Ceuta border after new migration calls

Spain’s Guardia Civil warned Tuesday people in Morocco against attempting to enter Ceuta irregularly on Aug. 15, as Moroccan authorities reinforced security around Fnideq and routes leading to the Spanish enclave ahead of new social media calls for a mass crossing.

“The border is not open,” the force said in Instagram and TikTok posts alongside images of new security barriers installed after the migration crisis at the end of July. “If you cross them, you will be returned. Do not be deceived.”

The warning follows messages circulating on Facebook, WhatsApp and other platforms calling on young people to gather for another attempt to reach Ceuta on Aug. 15. Spanish authorities have said they are monitoring the mobilisation, although its organisers, scale and likely turnout remain unclear.

Moroccan authorities have since reinforced their presence around Fnideq and the border area, with additional patrols, checkpoints and surveillance of coastal and mountain routes previously used in irregular crossing attempts.

Spain has meanwhile installed additional maritime barriers near the Tarajal crossing, including security equipment extending into the sea, as authorities seek to prevent another large-scale attempt.

Madrid has also stressed cooperation with Rabat on migration control and the return of people who entered Ceuta irregularly during the July crossings.

The renewed mobilisation comes less than three weeks after the July crisis placed unprecedented pressure on the enclave and triggered reinforced security deployments on both sides of the border.
