Argentina announced Tuesday that it is recalling its ambassador to Brazil after the Brazilian government requested the diplomat’s departure, further deepening tensions between South America’s two largest economies.
In a statement, Argentina’s Foreign Ministry said Buenos Aires would reduce its diplomatic representation in Brazil to the level of chargé d’affaires following Brazil’s request that Ambassador Guillermo Daniel Raimondi leave the country.
The move came after Argentine President Javier Milei renewed his attacks on Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva during an interview with Argentine television channel LN+, referring to Lula as an “ex-convict,” a “thief,” and “corrupt,” according to Reuters.
The latest exchange marks another setback in relations between the neighboring countries. Since taking office in December 2023, Milei and Lula have not held an official bilateral meeting.
Diplomatic tensions had already escalated last year when Brazil recalled its ambassador to Buenos Aires after Milei publicly criticized Brazil’s political leadership and judiciary during a visit to the country.
At the time, Argentina sought to downplay the dispute. Presidential spokesperson Manuel Adorni said the tensions reflected “ideological and political differences” rather than a broader diplomatic conflict.
Ambassador Guillermo Daniel Raimondi is expected to leave Brazil following the government’s request.
