Former Moroccan international referee Jilali Gharib passed away on Sunday, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) announced.
In a condolence message published on the federation’s official website, FRMF President Fouzi Lekjaa paid tribute to one of the leading figures of Moroccan refereeing, recalling that the late Jilali Gharib was the first Moroccan referee to officiate at the final phase of a FIFA World Cup.
Gharib served as an assistant referee at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States, where he notably officiated the third-place playoff between Sweden and Bulgaria.
During his career, the late official also took charge of several matches at the AFC Asian Cup and the Olympic Games.
