Morocco’s ruling National Rally of Independents (RNI) has called for a responsible and unified response to the deadly migration incidents near the occupied city of Ceuta, urging political actors to avoid exploiting the tragedy while emphasizing the need for closer international cooperation on migration management.

In a statement issued after a meeting of its Political Bureau, the party expressed “deep sorrow and profound sadness” over the deaths of several Moroccan youths during recent attempts to reach Ceuta.

The party extended its condolences to the victims’ families and wished a speedy recovery to those injured, describing the events as “a national moment that calls for collective responsibility.”

“The sanctity of human life should remain above political calculations,” the statement said, warning against attempts to turn the tragedy into a source of political gain.

Praise for Moroccan authorities

The Political Bureau praised Moroccan authorities for what it described as their “wisdom, restraint, and professionalism” in managing the crisis.

According to the party, state institutions responded swiftly while prioritizing the protection of lives and citizens’ dignity in accordance with Moroccan law and the country’s international commitments.

The statement said Morocco had demonstrated the maturity of its institutions and their ability to manage complex crises “with competence and responsibility.”

Concerns over Spanish court ruling

The RNI also addressed the recent ruling by Spain’s Supreme Court concerning the treatment of migrants who reach Ceuta by sea.

While acknowledging that the decision falls within Spain’s judicial sphere rather than reflecting a political position, the party argued that it raises legal questions about its compatibility with the broader European framework governing migration and asylum.

According to the statement, judicial interpretations of this nature risk weakening joint efforts to combat irregular migration by creating expectations that could be exploited by human trafficking networks.

The party warned that such rulings may encourage false hopes among young people seeking to migrate irregularly, potentially affecting border security and migration management across the Mediterranean.

It called for stronger coordination between Morocco, Spain, and European partners to preserve the progress achieved in bilateral cooperation on migration and security.

Migration requires shared responsibility

The Political Bureau rejected what it described as attempts to assign responsibility selectively, arguing that irregular migration has become a complex global challenge that cannot be reduced to political disputes or simplistic explanations.

Instead, it called for a realistic approach based on shared responsibility among all stakeholders while respecting the spirit of partnership and cooperation.

Focus on youth

The party said the tragedy should serve as a catalyst for strengthening public policies aimed at young people.

It argued for a more comprehensive approach addressing economic, social, educational, cultural, and psychological needs while creating opportunities that encourage young Moroccans to build their future at home.

The statement also emphasized the importance of civic education grounded in citizenship, responsibility, and national belonging.

Reaffirming the development agenda

The RNI concluded by praising the messages contained in King Mohammed VI’s recent Throne Day speech and reaffirming its commitment to advancing Morocco’s social state, strengthening public institutions, and pursuing the country’s development agenda.

According to the party, Morocco will continue positioning itself as a reliable regional and international partner while working to protect human dignity, support its youth, and reinforce citizens’ confidence in the country’s institutions.
