Morocco activated a central election-monitoring committee in Rabat on Monday to oversee the integrity of the September 23 legislative elections, the Interior Ministry said.
The committee was established following instructions from King Mohammed VI to the interior minister and the head of the Public Prosecution Office to safeguard the election process.
Regional and provincial monitoring committees were also activated across the country. Each provincial body will include the local governor or provincial authority and the relevant public prosecutor.
The committees will monitor all stages of the electoral process, respond immediately to suspected violations and, where necessary, initiate investigations or judicial proceedings.
The ministry said the bodies would operate in accordance with existing laws and without interfering with the powers of legislative, judicial or administrative institutions.
The central committee may also meet political party leaders to brief them on election preparations, hear proposals and address concerns arising during the campaign and voting process.
