Egypt’s Football Association has officially filed a complaint with FIFA, calling for an investigation into the refereeing decisions that overshadowed the team’s World Cup quarter-final defeat to Argentina.
The Pharaohs looked set for a famous victory after taking a 2-0 lead before the defending champions made a late comeback, scoring three goals in the final minutes to seal a 3-2 win.
The federation argues that a second Egyptian goal was wrongly disallowed following a VAR review for an earlier foul, while similar incidents in the build-up to Argentina’s winning goal were not reviewed. The complaint also questions the decision not to award Egypt a penalty after a challenge on Mohamed Salah and alleges that another foul moments later was overlooked by match officials.
Egyptian Football Association president Hany Abo Rida has demanded that French referee François Letexier and his officiating team be removed from the remainder of the tournament pending an investigation.
Goalscorer Zico accused the referee of being “unfair” and suggested the match was biased, while head coach Hossam Hassan claimed his side had been treated unjustly and questioned whether officials were determined to keep Argentina and Lionel Messi in the competition.
FIFA has not yet responded publicly to Egypt’s complaint.
