King Mohammed VI praised US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara on Saturday, saying the decision would remain engraved in Moroccans’ collective memory.

In a message marking the 250th anniversary of US independence, the king also highlighted 250 years of ties between the two countries and recalled Morocco’s historic role as the first state to recognise the United States.

He said relations had reached an unprecedented level during Trump’s two presidential terms, citing expanding trade and economic links as well as close security and military cooperation.

The king described the annual African Lion exercises hosted by Morocco as an example of the strategic defence partnership between Rabat and Washington.

He expressed confidence that bilateral relations were moving towards their strongest period and reaffirmed Morocco’s commitment to deepening cooperation with the United States.
