Two Moroccan locations recorded some of the world’s highest temperatures on Saturday as an intense heatwave continued across the country.
Khemisset reached 47.3C and Sidi Slimane recorded 47C, according to El Dorado Weather’s rolling list of maximum temperatures reported by global weather stations over the previous 24 hours.
At 2 p.m. UTC, Khemisset ranked fifth and Sidi Slimane eighth, although positions on the list changed as new readings were received. Turpan in northwestern China topped the table at 49.1C.
The figures should be treated as a snapshot of reporting stations rather than a definitive ranking of the world’s hottest cities.
Morocco’s weather agency said extreme heat would continue across northern and central plains, the southeast and southern provinces, with temperatures forecast to reach 46C in several areas through Sunday.
