Morocco exported about 708,000 tonnes of tomatoes in 2025, surpassing Spain by more than 126,000 tonnes as the two countries continued moving in opposite directions in the global market.
UN Comtrade figures cited by Spanish newspaper El Debate show Moroccan exports increased by nearly 35% from 2016, when they stood at about 525,000 tonnes. Spanish shipments fell 36% over the same period to around 581,000 tonnes.
Morocco ranked third globally by export volume in 2025, behind Mexico and the Netherlands, while Spain fell to fourth place.
Spanish growers attribute the shift partly to lower Moroccan labour costs and differences between EU and non-EU production rules. Those claims reflect the sector’s position rather than an independent finding by the trade data.
The longer-term growth also masks a more difficult 2025–26 Moroccan season, when exports reportedly fell amid plant disease and storm damage to greenhouses.
