Ronald Koeman resigned as Netherlands coach on Tuesday, less than 24 hours after Morocco eliminated his team from the 2026 World Cup.
The Netherlands lost 3-2 on penalties after their round-of-32 match in Monterrey ended 1-1 following extra time.
Koeman announced the decision in a farewell statement, saying he had hoped to end his second spell with the national team by winning the World Cup.
“That dream ultimately went unrealized. But more than anything, I am proud, proud of everything football has given me, of the people I have met along the way, and of having had the privilege of making my greatest passion my career,” he said, adding that the failure to achieve that objective had brought his tenure to an end.
Koeman returned as Netherlands coach in January 2023 after previously leading the team between 2018 and 2020.
His tactics against Morocco drew heavy criticism in the Dutch media, particularly his decision to begin the match with five defenders.
The Netherlands had targeted at least a semi-final appearance but were eliminated in their first knockout match.
