Morocco launched construction of a MAD 240 million international film production complex in Ouarzazate on Friday, seeking to keep foreign productions in the city longer by adding post-production, training and accommodation facilities.
The project will include eight sections covering filming studios, digital laboratories, editing rooms, broadcasting and training facilities, as well as hotels rated from three to five stars for Moroccan and international crews.
The Drâa-Tafilalet Regional Council is providing MAD 80 million, while the communication and industry ministries are contributing MAD 60 million each under financing scheduled for 2025 and 2026.
Youth, Culture and Communication Minister Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid said the complex would fill Ouarzazate’s post-production gap, allowing films shot in the region to complete more work locally.
The government expects the project to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs and offer producers a one-stop service.
Foreign film investment in Morocco reached MAD 1.24 billion in 2024. Officials also inspected restoration work at Taourirt Kasbah and the UNESCO-listed Aït Benhaddou site.
