Morocco’s audiovisual regulator has barred radio and television stations from airing deceptive AI-generated election content and ordered clear labels on legitimate artificial material, under binding rules adopted for the September 23 legislative elections.
The High Audiovisual Communication Authority’s Superior Council adopted Decision No. 50-26 on June 16, setting rules for election coverage by public and private broadcasters from August 15 through September 22.
Simulating the appearance, voice or identity of a real person requires explicit and visible disclosure.
On polling, broadcasters must suspend the publication of any opinion survey results related to the elections starting 15 days before the official campaign opens, a ban that extends through the close of polling.
The decision also sets transparency requirements for guests. Broadcasters must disclose any partisan affiliation, political commitment or financial interest held by experts, analysts, academics or influencers appearing in electoral programs.
Journalists and presenters who are themselves candidates, or who have publicly backed a party, must be taken off air from the date candidacies are officially announced.
Candidates and party-affiliated figures may not appear in entertainment, sports or cultural programmes during the electoral period, a measure aimed at preventing indirect campaign messaging.
The CSCA will sit in open session throughout the electoral period to monitor coverage balance. A dedicated oversight committee will track compliance across public and private operators.
