Egyptian club Al Ahly announced on Monday the official appointment of Moroccan coach Houcine Ammouta as head coach of its first-team football squad, replacing Danish coach Jes Torup.

In a press release posted on its official account on the “X” platform, the Cairo-based club stated that Houcine Ammouta’s contract will span the next two seasons, making him the first Moroccan coach in Al Ahly’s history.

The club stated that its board of directors, chaired by Mahmoud El Khatib, approved during its meeting on Monday the restructuring of the football department proposed by Yassine Mansour, the club’s vice president, and Sayed Abdelhafiz, the board member in charge of football affairs.

Al Ahly also decided to appoint Yasser Radwan, a former iconic player for the club, as assistant coach on the new technical staff.

The Egyptian club had terminated the contract of its previous coach, Jes Torup, following results deemed disappointing last season, marked notably by the loss of the Egyptian league title to rival Zamalek, as well as the team’s elimination in the quarterfinals of the African Champions League against Espérance Sportive de Tunis.

Houcine Ammouta has several successful achievements to his credit, most notably winning the 2020 African Nations Championship (CHAN) with Morocco’s national team of home-grown players. He also won the Moroccan league title and the CAF Champions League with Wydad Casablanca in 2017, defeating Al Ahly, as well as the African Confederation Cup with FUS Rabat in 2010.

Internationally, he won the Qatar League title with Al Sadd in 2013 and led the Jordanian national team to its first Asian Cup final in 2023.
