United Nations envoy Staffan de Mistura met Monday with Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf as part of a regional tour aimed at advancing efforts to revive the U.N.-led political process on the Sahara issue.

The meeting marked the latest stop in De Mistura’s consultations with parties involved in the dispute and comes ahead of his next briefing to the U.N. Security Council.

Algeria remains a key actor in the Sahara file, hosting the Tindouf refugee camps and maintaining its support for the Polisario Front.

De Mistura’s visit to Algeria follows meetings in the Tindouf camps and forms part of a broader regional tour conducted under his mandate from U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres and relevant Security Council resolutions.

The consultations are intended to support implementation of Security Council Resolution 2797, which renewed calls for the resumption of the political process to achieve a realistic, practical, durable and mutually acceptable political solution.

During his regional mission, De Mistura temporarily traveled to Oslo, where he held consultations with Massad Boulos, senior adviser to the U.S. president for African and Middle Eastern affairs, on the sidelines of the 2026 Oslo Forum.

The meeting underscored ongoing coordination between the United Nations and the United States regarding the future of the political process.

Although no official announcement has been made regarding the possibility of future negotiations in Norway, the timing of the consultations has prompted speculation about a potential role for Oslo in facilitating future discussions between the parties.

According to U.N. sources, De Mistura attended the Oslo Forum accompanied by his political adviser, Christopher Thornton, to consult with international partners before resuming his regional tour.

The consultations are expected to help clarify the positions of the various parties and assess prospects for restarting political negotiations ahead of the envoy’s upcoming report to the Security Council.

Earlier, De Mistura’s office confirmed that the current regional tour is part of ongoing consultations with all stakeholders involved in the dispute as the United Nations continues efforts to advance the political process.
