United Nations envoy for the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, arrived in the Tindouf camps in Algeria on Sunday, launching a new regional tour aimed at consulting parties involved in the decades old dispute ahead of his next briefing to the U.N. Security Council.
The visit forms part of a broader round of consultations mandated by Security Council Resolution 2797, which calls for the continuation of the U.N. led political process to achieve a realistic, practical and lasting political solution based on compromise.
De Mistura is expected to hold talks with leaders of the Polisario Front to discuss recent developments and gather their views on the future of the political process. The meetings are part of wider consultations with all stakeholders involved in the dispute.
The envoy’s tour comes at a time of renewed diplomatic activity surrounding the Sahara issue, with the United Nations and several international actors seeking to create conditions for restarting political negotiations after years of limited progress.
In comments to Hespress, De Mistura’s office said the envoy would engage with all parties concerned as part of the political process outlined in Resolution 2797. The office added that the consultations are being conducted within a framework coordinated by the United Nations and the United States.
De Mistura’s findings from the regional tour are expected to inform his upcoming presentation to the Security Council on the state of the political process and prospects for advancing negotiations.
