Mauritania’s ambassador to the United Nations, Cheikhna Ould Nenni, met with UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, in New York to discuss the latest developments in the dispute, following a closed-door meeting of the UN Security Council.
Ould Nenni said in a Facebook post that the meeting took place a day after de Mistura briefed the Security Council on the activities of his team and the meetings held since the adoption of Resolution 2797 in 2025.
The Mauritanian envoy said the resolution, which has the support of the United States, identifies Morocco’s autonomy proposal as the basis for negotiations among the parties to the dispute: Morocco, the Polisario Front, Algeria and Mauritania.
Discussions within the Security Council also concern the duration of the renewal of the mandate of the UN Mission for the Referendum in the Sahara (MINURSO), alongside other issues related to the dispute, Ould Nenni said, without providing further details about his talks with de Mistura.
The meeting was also attended by Christopher Thornton, head of de Mistura’s office, and Boukari Soumare, an adviser at Mauritania’s UN mission.
