A 24 year old Israeli man was arrested at Ercan Airport in northern Cyprus after authorities allegedly found four human embryos hidden inside a specialized transport container in his luggage, in a case that has intensified scrutiny of the territory’s booming IVF sector and cross border fertility industry.

According to Turkish Cypriot, Israeli and Cypriot media reports, the suspect was preparing to board a flight to Mexico via Istanbul when security officers discovered four embryos stored in separate test tubes inside a container labeled “Life Parcel.”

Authorities suspect the embryos were being transported without the permits required under local laws regulating the transfer of human cells and tissues.

Investigators said the embryos allegedly originated from an IVF clinic in Lefkoşa, or northern Nicosia, which authorities now suspect was operating without full authorization. Police later arrested two Turkish Cypriot nationals linked to the clinic, including its director and a doctor.

Officials in northern Cyprus said a company connected to the clinic had applied for permission to transfer the embryos abroad, but investigators believe the transport attempt took place before final approval had formally been issued.
