Vladimir Putin has appointed veteran diplomat Igor Belyaev Alekseyevich as Russia’s new ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to Morocco, according to a presidential decree issued Tuesday.
The appointment replaces former ambassador Vladimir Baibakov, who had served in Rabat since May 2022.
The decree, numbered 334, was published on the Russian government’s official legal portal.
Born in 1967, Belyaev Alekseyevich graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, commonly known as MGIMO, which operates under Russia’s Foreign Ministry.
He began his diplomatic career in the late 1980s and has held several senior positions within Russia’s diplomatic service.
Between 2003 and 2008, he served as first counselor at Russia’s embassy in Damascus. He later became deputy head of the Middle East and North Africa department at the Russian Foreign Ministry from 2009 to 2017.
Belyaev Alekseyevich also served as Russia’s ambassador to Algeria until 2022 before returning to the Foreign Ministry to again serve in a senior role overseeing Middle East and North Africa affairs.
His appointment comes as Russia and Morocco continue diplomatic and economic cooperation across several sectors, including trade, energy and regional security.
