Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations Friday during a meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

According to Russia’s Foreign Ministry, the talks focused on the “main priorities” for further developing traditionally friendly relations between Moscow and Rabat.

The two ministers said multifaceted cooperation between the two countries was progressing in line with the 2016 declaration on deepening their strategic partnership, signed in Moscow on March 15, 2016.

They also expressed their intention to maintain what the Russian ministry described as “effective coordination” on regional and international issues.

The discussions included efforts to resolve the Sahara dispute, as well as other ongoing conflicts. The Russian statement said the two sides support addressing such issues through political and diplomatic means, based on internationally recognized principles of international law and the U.N. Charter.

The statement did not provide further details about the positions exchanged by the two ministers on the Sahara dispute.

The meeting took place during a series of diplomatic meetings in New York alongside the high-level week of the 81st session of the U.N. General Assembly.

Russia has traditionally maintained a position calling for a political settlement of the Sahara dispute under U.N. auspices. Moscow has also abstained on several U.N. Security Council resolutions concerning the issue in recent years, including Resolution 2797 adopted in October 2025.
