Patrice Motsepe, president of the Confederation of African Football, has renewed his confidence that an African national team can one day win the FIFA World Cup, saying the target is no longer out of reach for the continent.
Speaking in an interview with France 24, Motsepe said he believes African football has the talent and potential needed to compete at the highest global level.
The CAF president based his optimism on the recent progress of African football, noting that African teams have already managed to reach advanced stages in previous World Cups. This progress is best illustrated by Morocco’s historic run at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where the Atlas Lions became the first African and Arab team to reach the semi-finals.
Motsepe concluded by stressing that the real challenge for African football is to build a national team capable of reaching the highest level on the world stage and eventually winning the World Cup, in a way that reflects the progress football is making across the continent.
