A Moroccan delegation led by Hassan Naciri visited the spiritual city of Touba under instructions from King Mohammed VI in a move highlighting the long standing religious and human ties between Morocco and Senegal.
The delegation was received by Serigne Mountakha Mbacke, the spiritual leader of Senegal’s influential Mouride brotherhood, according to a statement from the Moroccan embassy in Dakar.
The visit comes within the framework of Morocco’s religious diplomacy in West Africa, where Rabat has expanded cooperation with Sufi orders, Islamic institutions and religious universities over the past two decades.
During the meeting, the Mouride leader expressed gratitude to King Mohammed VI for what he described as continued support for the Mouride order and academic cooperation involving the Al Khadim university complex in Touba.
Ambassador Naciri conveyed the king’s greetings and stressed Morocco’s support for Senegal’s Sufi families, describing them as pillars of spiritual fraternity and moderate Islam between the two countries.
The visit also included meetings with Mouride spokesman Serigne Bassirou Mbacke Abdou Khadre and Khadim University president Cheikh Ahmed Badaoui.
Morocco and Senegal maintain close religious relations rooted in the Maliki school of Islam, Asharite doctrine and Sufi traditions, particularly the Tijaniyya and Mouride brotherhoods, which continue to play an influential social and political role across West Africa.
