Morocco is set to expand the use of drones on several beaches during the 2026 summer season as authorities step up efforts to improve rescue operations and reduce drowning incidents along the country’s coastline.
According to Hespress sources, the drone technology will primarily be used for aerial surveillance during emergencies, providing monitoring centers with real-time overhead views to help guide interventions, particularly during peak beach attendance periods.
The system was previously tested on beaches in Agadir and Tangier last summer, with authorities considering the technology an effective tool for improving the speed and efficiency of rescue operations.
The preparations are part of a broader coordination effort between regional civil protection departments and local councils to secure beaches ahead of the summer season.
Sources said several beaches have already begun deploying seasonal lifeguards this week. The lifeguards, who completed training after passing recruitment exams held in April, are expected to remain on duty through September.
