Eight Moroccan truck drivers are stranded in Mali amid escalating violence, with transport unions urging authorities to secure military escort for their safe return.
The drivers, operating eight trucks, are reportedly trapped between the Diéma and Dori areas while returning to Morocco after deliveries across West Africa, according to the Moroccan Union of International and National Transport Professionals. The zone is considered highly dangerous due to ongoing armed clashes.
The union said it had contacted Moroccan diplomatic services to request urgent intervention, including protection and coordinated evacuation. Other Moroccan drivers remain near borders with Burkina Faso and Mauritania but are considered in relatively safer conditions.
The situation reflects a broader deterioration in Mali’s security environment, where armed groups have intensified attacks on transport routes and logistics convoys. Recent violence has targeted truck drivers and disrupted key corridors linking the country to regional markets.
Union officials have instructed drivers to maintain distance between vehicles, avoid gatherings, and suspend movement until conditions improve. They warned that the current security situation is “unprecedented” and requires high-level coordination to prevent further risks.
The incident highlights growing exposure of Moroccan transport operators to instability across the Sahel, a critical trade corridor for goods moving between Morocco and sub-Saharan Africa.
