The public prosecutor’s office in Rabat ordered the placement of 136 people in police custody following violent clashes that erupted after a football match between AS FAR (Army Royal Football Club) and Raja Club Athletic late Thursday at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex, authorities said.
Two individuals were also retained in custody as investigations continued into the unrest, according to official data.
The violence broke out immediately after the final whistle and spread from the stadium surroundings into nearby neighborhoods, prompting a large-scale security intervention to disperse groups of supporters. Police said arrests were made after identifying suspects through surveillance footage linked to acts of vandalism.
Security operations continued as fans left the venue, but scattered groups persisted in violent behavior outside the stadium perimeter. The Al Fath neighborhood, near local sports fields, recorded the most significant damage, where around 10 vehicles were vandalized and a motorcycle belonging to a local official was set on fire. Security forces were also targeted with stone-throwing, officials said.
By midnight, the gatherings had fully dispersed and traffic flow returned to normal, particularly along the highway connecting Rabat and Casablanca.
The detained individuals have been distributed across various security units pending further investigation into the extent of the damages and identification of those responsible, authorities added.
The match itself ended with AS FAR defeating Raja Casablanca 2-1 in a tightly contested “classico” fixture marked by a strong crowd presence and intense stadium atmosphere.
