Morocco is “a leading strategic partner” for the European Union (EU) in the field of green energy transition, stated Daniele Dotto, Deputy Head of the European Union Delegation to the Kingdom of Morocco, on Wednesday in Fez.
Dotto, speaking at the opening of an international conference on e-methanol and e-ammonia organized by the Green H2 Cluster, highlighted the relevant and unique EU-Morocco Green Partnership signed in 2022, which has facilitated the implementation of three flagship projects over the past three years.
According to him, this includes Med-Gem (support for the production of green molecules in the southern neighborhood), enabling Morocco to launch the first pre-certification of green hydrogen projects compliant with EU standards.
The official also cited Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), noting that a feasibility study on the manufacturing of this product in Morocco is currently underway, as well as the Green Energy Project (GIZ).
As part of this latter project, the EU is adding an additional €10 million to support Morocco’s energy transition, with a focus on regulatory reforms, R&D, and the development of a regional hub in Guelmim-Oued Noun, he explained.
Beyond these projects, he noted, “we are pleased to see that European companies are engaging extensively with Moroccan stakeholders,” adding that the EU is also stepping up its efforts regarding financing tools and financial guarantees to support the private sector.
Organized in partnership with Euromed University in Fez, this event brought together public policymakers, industry leaders, investors, port authorities, project developers, technology companies, financial institutions, and international experts. Discussions focused on market prospects, bankability criteria, and industrialization trends related to e-methanol and e-ammonia.
