Scholars from Morocco and Spain gathered in Tangier this week for a three-day seminar focused on research cooperation and cross-border collaboration, according to a press release.
The event, titled “Crossing the Strait Research Seminar,” ran April 27–29 at the Tangier American Legation. It brought together 26 American Fulbright researchers based in both countries, along with alumni and partner institutions.
The program opened Monday evening with a concert and reception, setting a relaxed tone before transitioning into academic discussions the following day. Panels covered topics including shared history, education, energy and public health, alongside workshops aimed at strengthening research partnerships.

Organizers said the goal was to reframe the Strait of Gibraltar as a space for exchange rather than separation, encouraging scholars to explore how centuries of movement between Morocco and Spain continue to shape culture, language and ideas.
The seminar also coincided with the United States marking 250 years of independence, underscoring the role of education and research in strengthening international ties.
Participants said the gathering highlighted how academic collaboration can build long-term connections beyond politics, linking communities through shared knowledge and research.
