Polisario at Kidal: Early signals now echo in Mali’s biggest attack

Weeks after Mali withdrew its recognition of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic and aligned itself with Morocco’s position on the Sahara, the Algerian-backed Polisario Front has been widely reported to have shown up in the largest coordinated militant offensive Mali has seen in more than a decade.

A fighter identified as a Polisario member was filmed in a clip that moved through the Moroccan information ecosystem within hours.  He speaks in Hassania, from what appears to be the Kidal battle zone, and addresses the question of whether Polisario is involved in the fighting directly: “Those who say we are not here, we are here.”

The clip was posted to X late Sunday and amplified by regional accounts which framed it as confirmation of Algerian backing for terrorism in the Sahel.

The Polisario Front had not, as of Tuesday morning, issued a public denial. The FLA’s on-record spokesman has not addressed the coalition with Polisario fighters in his AFP statements. JNIM’s own claim of responsibility focused exclusively on its operations.

But the longer story,  the one connecting Bamako’s diplomatic shift, Algiers’ political loss, and the convergence of Polisario fighters with al-Qaeda’s Sahel franchise, has been forming for years, and only became operational last weekend.

The Malian military government formally withdrew its recognition of the SADR, the entity proclaimed by the Polisario Front in 1976 and recognized only by Algeria and a shrinking list of countries.

Prior to this, Mali had been a Sahel partner of Algeria, and SADR recognition by Sahel states formed part of the diplomatic perimeter that sustains the Polisario’s claim to statehood.

The U.S. recognition of Moroccan sovereignty in 2020, the European parliamentary momentum since 2024, and now Mali’s pivot have collectively narrowed that perimeter.

The accusation that Algeria backs armed groups operating on Malian territory is not a Moroccan extrapolation. It is on Bamako’s record, made publicly by Mali’s military government in 2024 and reiterated in 2025 after the collapse of the Algiers Accord.

Mali’s foreign ministry accused Algeria of “interference” and maintaining contacts with actors it now classifies as terrorist groups. The factual baseline that Algeria hosts Polisario leadership and the Tindouf camps from which the movement operates uncontested.

The Polisario’s operational footprint outside the Tindouf-Sahara theater has been a growing concern of Sahel security analysts. The Africa Center for Strategic Studies, in coverage going back to 2024, has documented the increasing entanglement of Tuareg, jihadist and Sahrawi militant networks in the Algeria-Mali border space.

The political consequence is moving on a parallel track with members of both the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives examining proposals to designate the Polisario Front as a foreign terrorist organization, citing ties to Iran.

Designation would carry concrete diplomatic costs for Algeria, frozen U.S. financial channels for any entity tied to the Polisario, secondary sanctions exposure for states recognizing the SADR, and a structural shift in how the United Nations Security Council frames the Sahara file at the MINURSO mandate review scheduled for later this year.
