Beaches across the Casablanca-Settat region will be fully free to access this summer, following a decision by Wali Mohamed Mhidia to end the practice of paid parasol and chair rentals on public shores.
The Wali is set to issue strict directives to governors of coastal provinces, blocking approval of any new tenders related to the exploitation of maritime public domain or beach facilities.
The mayor of Casablanca has also been instructed to cancel ongoing tenders and find alternative organisational approaches that respect free access.
The decision aims to break with years of chaotic beach management, during which certain companies monopolised rental markets and imposed arbitrary pricing that Mhidia described as a form of indirect extortion against citizens.
Speaking at a Casa Environnement board meeting, the Wali reaffirmed that beaches must remain open spaces guaranteeing the right to leisure for all.
Authorities have promised strict enforcement to prevent illegal occupation of the maritime domain, with an intensification of control operations and field interventions planned ahead of the summer season.
