Watchdaog gives fuel firms deadline to change pricing system

Morocco’s Competition Council has given fuel companies time to reconsider how they adjust prices, as it weighs a shift away from the current system of synchronized revisions every 15 days toward a more flexible, market-driven approach.

Council head Ahmed Rahhou said discussions with operators will continue through the summer, stressing that any immediate change would be premature given ongoing global price volatility.

The Council has identified a pattern of aligned pricing updates among distributors, a legacy of the pre-2014 regulated system, which now limits flexibility in a liberalized market . While no anti-competitive conduct has been confirmed, the watchdog says the practice reduces responsiveness to international price movements.

Rahhou said fuel prices remain primarily driven by global markets, with Morocco highly exposed as a net importer of petroleum products.

The Council is expected to revisit the pricing framework once current volatility eases, with the aim of improving competition while preserving market stability.
