Morocco is stepping up the implementation of its national seawater desalination strategy to strengthen the security of its water supply in the face of the scarcity of conventional resources, the Spanish daily El Español reported on Sunday.
According to the publication, this ambitious strategy aims to reach an annual production of 1.7 billion cubic meters of desalinated water by 2030, with the objective of raising the share of desalination to 60% of national drinking water, compared to around 25% currently.
This program is part of a broad plan to develop water infrastructure, including in particular the construction of a major plant in Tiznit, with a capacity of 350 million cubic meters per year, intended to supply urban centers and surrounding agricultural areas. This facility has a strategic character for the Kingdom’s food security, the newspaper notes.
The plan also provides for the construction of new units in Nador, Tangier, Rabat, and Casablanca, with a combined capacity estimated at 540 million cubic meters, the same source adds.
Morocco currently has 17 operational desalination plants, with a total annual production of 345 million cubic meters. The new infrastructures, whose commissioning is scheduled before 2027, will be powered by renewable energy, in line with the national strategy aimed at making desalination a major pillar of water security.
At the same time, the Kingdom is developing complementary initiatives, such as the port project in Tan-Tan dedicated to the export of green hydrogen and ammonia, illustrating the convergence between water policies and the energy transition, the publication notes.
In a context marked by the effects of climate change and increasing pressure on water resources, Morocco thus intends to make desalination a central lever of its water and energy security, El Español concludes.
