Morocco eyes next generation U.S. spy aircraft system as defense ambitions widen

Morocco is evaluating a possible move toward the U.S. Army’s High Accuracy Detection and Exploitation System, or HADES, in what defense outlet Defensa described as a broader rethink of the kingdom’s airborne intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance strategy, aimed at giving the Royal Armed Forces deeper, longer range sensing capabilities across the Sahara, the Sahel approaches, the Atlantic coast and northern maritime corridors.

The report says Rabat’s interest reflects an effort to close a longstanding capability gap in high altitude, long endurance airborne intelligence collection, particularly in signals intelligence, electronic surveillance and wide area monitoring.

Defensa said Morocco had earlier explored acquiring Gulfstream G550 aircraft and modifying them into intelligence platforms, but that effort did not materialize, leaving the air force reliant on more limited or older assets such as the Dassault Falcon 20.

The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency’s published major sales notices do not show a HADES related case for Morocco at this stage.

HADES is the centerpiece of a next generation aerial Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance architecture. The U.S. Army says the system is designed to deliver greater speed, altitude, range, endurance and payload than legacy platforms, enabling “deep sensing” in contested environments.

Army statements say the program is being built to collect and process intelligence across multiple domains and that the first Global 6500 based platform was purchased in late 2024, with the integrated system expected to be ready by early 2027.

Buying into HADES could offer Morocco access to a U.S. led technology ecosystem with future upgrades and a high degree of interoperability with American systems, an important factor for a military that has steadily expanded defense ties with Washington.

Even so, any acquisition path would likely be lengthy, involving political approvals, technical negotiations and the U.S. foreign military sales process, but if it moves forward, the purchase would mark one of Morocco’s most significant steps yet toward strategic airborne intelligence collection.
