Around 23,000 Moroccan nationals obtained Italian citizenship last year, according to newly released data from Italy’s National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT), placing them second among all foreign groups naturalized in the country. Albanians ranked first with approximately 26,000 new citizens, followed by Romanians with around 16,000.
The figures also show that the number of foreign residents in Italy exceeded 5.56 million at the start of the current year, marking a 3.5% annual increase and accounting for roughly 9.4% of the total population. ISTAT attributed this growth mainly to strong net migration and a rise in births among foreign communities.
Foreign residents are concentrated בעיקר in northern Italy, where about 3.23 million live, while more than 1.3 million reside in central regions. In contrast, southern Italy hosts fewer than 1 million foreign residents, representing just 5% of the local population.
Overall, Italy’s total population holding citizenship stands at over 53 million, reflecting a decrease of 189,000 people. A total of 196,000 foreigners were granted citizenship last year, down from 217,000 in 2024 and 214,000 in 2023. This decline has been linked to recent legislative changes, particularly Law No. 74, which introduced stricter requirements for acquiring citizenship through ancestry (iure sanguinis).
