Patrice Motsepe, president of the Confederation of African Football, said Thursday that an upcoming ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on the Africa Cup of Nations final dispute could help unify African football and end ongoing controversy surrounding the case.
Speaking at a press conference at the Mohammed VI Football Complex during a visit to Morocco, Motsepe said CAF is committed to respecting the CAS decision regardless of the outcome. He emphasized that preserving unity within African football and strengthening institutional credibility remain top priorities.
Motsepe acknowledged that the incidents surrounding the AFCON final held in Morocco were “unacceptable” and damaging to the image of African competitions. He said such events highlight the need for reforms in the organization and management of continental tournaments.
CAF has already begun drawing lessons from the crisis and is implementing measures to prevent similar incidents in the future, including regulatory changes and improvements in governance mechanisms, he said.
The organization is also planning broader reforms aimed at establishing a more transparent and rigorous framework for managing competitions, with the goal of ensuring optimal conditions and reinforcing trust among stakeholders.
Motsepe added that Africa has strong potential to further develop football on the continent, stressing that unity will be key to overcoming challenges and achieving global competitiveness.
