Morocco’s audiovisual regulator said Radio Mars began airing a formal sanction notice on Monday after the watchdog suspended one of the station’s sports programs for a week over insulting remarks directed at a Moroccan national team player during commentary on the Africa Cup of Nations final.
The High Authority for Audiovisual Communication, known as HACA, said the sanction followed the use of derogatory and offensive language by the host of “Assad Africa.” Because the program is no longer on air, the regulator said it instead ordered a warning and the one week suspension of “Al Haqiqa fi 90 Daqiqa,” while requiring the station to broadcast the penalty statement during the suspended show’s usual slot.
HACA said the remarks exceeded the bounds of legitimate sports criticism and infringed on the player’s dignity, adding that the repeated nature of past breaches underscored shortcomings in editorial control and self regulation at the station.
