Major commercial markets in Casablanca experienced a noticeable slowdown in the days following the Eid al-Fitrholiday, with activity dropping significantly in key trading hubs.
A field visit by Hespress found that many shops remained closed in Derb Omar and Garage Allal, two of the country’s largest wholesale markets. Streets that are typically crowded with traders and shoppers appeared unusually quiet.
The report also noted a shortage in the supply of goods, particularly in consumer products, plastics and clothing.
Traders attributed the temporary slowdown to the post-holiday period coinciding with spring conditions in regions such as Souss and the Atlas Mountains, where many merchants and workers chose to spend time with their families.
The situation led to reduced labor availability and slower supply and distribution within these markets, which serve as key suppliers to retailers across Morocco.
Said Farah, secretary-general of the Association of Traders and Importers at Derb Omar, said the markets are experiencing an “unusual calm” after the holiday period.
“This slowdown is something we usually observe around Eid al-Adha, but it is more pronounced this time following Eid al-Fitr,” Farah told Hespress.
He added that many traders and workers come from outside Casablanca and use the holiday period to return to their hometowns, directly affecting commercial activity.
Favorable weather conditions following recent rainfall also encouraged many to extend their holidays with family, after years of drought, he said.
Traders interviewed during the visit said activity is expected to gradually resume in the coming days, with markets likely to regain their usual dynamism by early next week.
